Gas
Range - Use and Safety Tips
- It
probably goes without saying that your natural gas range will last
longer and operate more efficiently if you take good care of
it.
- Always
read save and follow the manufacturer's instruction manual that came
with the appliance. Check all of the appliance's safety
ratings.
- Try
to always maintain the gas range in a clean condition.
- Get
any repairs done to the appliance that it may need as soon as possible.
- Never
use your range or oven for heating a room.
- Do
not keep flammable items on or near your range.
- It
is a good idea to use potholders instead of dish towels to handle hot
pots and pans. Towels or other substitutes may catch fire or
get tangled.
- In
the event of a fire, immediately turn off the oven, broiler or
burner. Use a dry powder fire extinguisher or sprinkle baking
soda on the burning area. Never use water on a grease fire as
it can cause the burning oil to splatter and spread.
- If
you smell gas, check all of the range's controls to make sure they are
turned off. If you find that they are all off and you can
still smell gas near the appliance, it's best to leave the house and
call the local gas utility company from a safer location.
Gas
Cooktop - Use and Safety Tips
- If
the holes in a burner are clogged, you can clean them with a pipe
cleaner, a paper clip, or a fine wire. Do not use a toothpick
or anything else that could get stuck inside and burn.
- A
good safely tip for using any cooking surface is to keep pan handles
turned away from you so they don't get knocked off the cooktop
accidently.
- After
lighting the burner, set the size of the flame so that it expands to
about one-half inch from the outer edge of the pan. If the
flame curls up past the sides of the pan, you are wasting
energy. Lower the flame to heat non-aluminum pans evenly.
- If
a pan of oil catches fire the fastest solution is simply to cover it
with a metal lid to snuff out the flame. If the flames seem
unmanageable then reach for a dry powder extinguisher. Again,
never use water on a grease fire.
Gas
Oven and Broiler - Maintenance and Safety Tips
- While
baking leave at least an inch of space between the oven walls and the
pans, this will provide for better circulation.
- If
you are using more than one pan, don't place them directly above or
below each other.
- Don't
place pans directly on the floor of the oven.
- If
the oven is not self cleaning or continuous cleaning, wipe it down with
a sudsy damp cloth and rinse thoroughly after each use.
- Clean
the seal around the oven door periodically, checking for worn out
gaskets that allow heat to escape.
- Immediately
after the oven has been used for cooking, take advantage of the heat
remaining inside by running a self-cleaning cycle.
- Don't
cover the bottom of the oven with aluminum foil as this might interfere
with heat and air circulation.
- To
protect the oven bottom from spills, place a cookie sheet or aluminum
foil on the oven rack directly below the one you are using.
But don't cover the entire rack as this will interfere with good air
flow.
- Do
not cover the top of a broiler pan with foil. Grease trapped
by the foil cannot cool and could catch fire. Instead cover
the bottom of the broiler pan with foil and let the grease drain unto
it through the top grid.
- To
make a broiler pan much easier to clean, remove it when finished
cooking and dispose of any grease that it has collected. Then
sprinkle the pan and grid with soap, cover them with wet paper towels,
and let them soak until they cool off. After that they can be
washed in the usual way much easier.
